CBD Oil for Seizures in Dogs

Cannabidiol or CBD oil for seizures first came into use with a little girl named Charlotte Figi. She was suffering severe seizures when she was just three months old. By the time she was five years old, this was up to about 300 seizures a week. And on a CBD regiment, she was able to return to normal life and bring down the incidents to about 2-3 times a month. This journey is extensively covered in a CNN documentary by Sanjay Gupta.

Set Up a CBD Oil Dosing Plan

The cannabis plant where CBD oil is extracted has the same superpower to do the same for dogs. There are two options here on how to manage seizures in your pet. One is a three times daily edible or dog treat infused with CBD. We recommend that this be done in conjunction to an oil or tincture. So, in the event the dog is in an active seizure you can administer the CBD oil for seizures sublingually.

The other option is to go just straight oil or tincture all the time. The issue that we have found with this straight oil method is, most dogs run as soon as they know you will be giving them the ill-tasting tinctures. And picky eaters will just refuse to eat their food even more. For this reason, we suggest it would be a good idea to mix it up. Dog treats infused with CBD oil will be much easier to give, just like giving any other treat. Your pet won’t even notice the difference. And, this can easily be included as a daily maintenance.

Hence, what this means for us pet parents is, less of a struggle and a daily fight with your pet to administer his dose. God only knows we have all been there before! The eating around a pill pocket, the eating all around it, and the running and hiding. With a dog treat infused with the oil, it becomes a pleasurable experience for all involved.

Most importantly stick to your chosen schedule and consistency is key.

Studies

According to Ian Miller, MD of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, “convulsive seizures decreased by 46% in children taking 20 mg/kg/day and 49% for children taking 10 mg/kg/day of cannabidiol, compared with 27% for placebo… The children in this study had already tried an average of four epilepsy drugs with no success and at the time were taking an average of three additional drugs, so to have this measure of success with cannabidiol is a major victory,” 1

According to the Journal of Epilepsy Research, “CBD was found to be superior to placebo in reducing the frequency of convulsive (tonic-clonic, tonic, clonic, and atonic) seizures in patients with Dravet syndrome, and the frequency of drop seizures in patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. For the first time, there is now class 1 evidence that adjunctive use of CBD improves seizure control in patients with specific epilepsy syndromes.” 2

How Does CBD Oil for Seizures Work?

All living beings with the exclusion of insects have an endocannabinoid system. This system is a primary regulatory system that keeps our bodies in functional balance. Our bodies naturally produce its own endocannabinoids. And these receptors are like docking stations found throughout our bodies like the brain, nervous system, skin, gastrointestinal system, bones, etc. Thus, it is widespread throughout our bodies. Dogs are no exception. As a result, the CBD’s from the cannabis plant attach to these receptors found throughout the body to bring them into balance.

An animal recovering from a torn ACL, or other surgery can benefit from a CBD treatment. Since it is known to help promote a restful sleep and decreased stress. Or better mobility from CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties and pain management for arthritis in dogs. The benefits of CBD are far and wide.

Did you know there are more than 100+ beneficial cannabinoids in the cannabis plant? They all have a different function that aids in different aspects of bringing all living beings into homeostasis. If you wish to read more about which cannabinoids can help with specific ailments, check out this infographic on CBD oil benefits list and CBD oil effects.

What is CBD? What are the CBD Effects?

What is CBD? CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is a naturally occurring compound in the cannabis plant. There are over 100+ cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. It has been reported to have therapeutic benefits. CBD is derived from the hemp plant is is extracted from its leaves and flowers. This oil has been reported to have very positive effects in interacting with living beings with an endocannabinoid system. This system is in charge of balancing our bodies and putting it in a state of homeostasis.

This ECS system and the cannabinoids help regulate our moods, stress, pain sensors, bone health, appetite levels, gastrointestinal health, even healthy skin. This ECS system is found through out our bodies. Think of each of the organs down to the skin, having its own docking station full of receptors that the endocannabinoid system regulates. These cannabinoids attach themselves to these docking stations to give them a balancing charge. Our bodies naturally produce cannabinoids, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t receive an outside boost from the oils extracted from the cannabis plant. And this goes the same for your pet. We all have an endocannabinoid system, except for insects.

The CB’s or cannabinoids all have their own specific functions and what they do to help our bodies, like like worker bees with specific jobs. Click on this infographic explaining the CBD Oil Effects and how the various cannabinoids target in the body.

How to Buy CBD Oil?

Now that you have a better understanding of what CBD is and how it works in conjunction to our bodies, you may be wondering: How do I choose the right CBD for myself or for my pet?

We suggest following these guidelines. It won’t matter if the oil is for yourself or your pet. These tips will help you to choose the safest and best product for you both.

Do not price shop. Not all CBD is created equal. Don’t let other competitors fool you with their rock bottom prices. These are products that utilize unchecked foreign regulations for safety and compliance. US manufacturers have complete license and certification packets. Products are manufactured in FDA inspected facilities. Third party lab results are checked for potency, solvents, heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, and a full terpene profile. You will be paying for quality.

Your Brand

When you find a brand that you like, stick with them. AFTER you have tried other brands. That manufacturer may have a mother plant whose terpene profile works better for you or your pet. Again– NOT all CBD is created equal. This time it is due to mother nature. She creates individual plants just as individual as you and I are. No two people are genetically alike except for twins. Plants are the same way. We suggest trying different brands to see how one brand works compared to another. Once you have done your own due diligence, then stick to your preferred brand.Don’t be afraid to ask the manufacturer questions directly about the safety of their manufacturing.

Here’s an example: Bark Avenue CBD dog treats are manufactured in an SQF3 facility. This is the highest food safety rating you can get as a supplier in the food industry. These are food safety systems based on HACCP principles that manage food safety risks and prevent contamination. Our oil comes for a vertically integrated manufacturer. Meaning, they are ones who do seed to sale.

What is seed to sale?

This means the CBD oil manufacturer grows, harvests, extracts, clones, and even tests all under one roof. No outsourcing. For instance, I am an extractor but I buy from several farmers to extract my oil, then I send it out to a lab to do testing. Not only is there a blind spot in the way you trust that your hemp farmer is doing things up to standard, despite all certifications; but one also doesn’t know if the product handling and testing in a lab was proper. Let’s face it, the less people handling things outside of your control, the less mistakes.

Bark Avenue understands this. And this is why we will be your dog food advisor for CBD treats, even if it’s not our own. Did you know that dosing is the most important piece of information to know for success in your pet’s health? Now you know.

CBD Oil Benefits

Listed above is a CBD oil benefits list of the major cannabinoids that will help explain the benefits to any living thing with an endocannabinoid system.

Fun fact 1: All animals with the exception of insects have some form of internal cannabinoid system.

What’s an ECS system?

What is an endocannabinoid system (ECS)? It is a network of receptors that exist in the body that was discovered in the 90’s by researchers. CBD oil effects include regulating mood, appetite, pain, stress, inflammation and anxiety among other things. The ECS manages complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and all of the body’s organs.

Dogs just like us have similar ECS systems like humans and this is why pharmaceutical companies often use them as test subjects. This handy guide will help explain what CBD can do for your beloved pet. Keep in mind that the THC components in this guide are controversial for animal use.

THC vs Hemp

There will be two types of product that can fall under the THC classification. For our peanut butter dog treats recipe, we use an industrial hemp derived CBD oil. This is where the THC or psychoactive content is .03% or less per dry weight. In short, it is high in CBD but with trace amounts of THC. This does not cause any psychoactive effects on the animal. This type of oil is also known as a full spectrum oil. It has all the benefits of the whole plant known as the “Entourage Effect”, minus the high. For the most part our tests register around half of the .03% threshold.

The second type of product you can buy that is .03% greater in THC, will be found in dispensaries. You cannot purchase this type of product online or in stores other than licensed dispensaries. We caution this usage and highly recommend veterinary advice when treating an animal where there are intoxicating effects involved. We would cautiously recommend this, except for animals that are perhaps at the end of life care, and comfort is the main goal. Again, consult your vet.

Fun fact 2: Did you know pigs have the most similar endocannabinoid system to humans?

What are cannabinoids?

What are cannabinoids or CBD’s? First, this is one word that will always be part of anyone who wishes to learn more about any form of cannabis usage. Secondly, they are chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant that interact with the ECS system that puts a physical body in homeostasis or in balance.

At present, science has discovered that there are about 113 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. We have covered the major CBD oil benefits list for the major cannabinoids.

CBD Oil Buying Basics for 2020

Since our initial launch in 2016, cannabidiol (CBD) dog treatsCBD oil for dogs, has gone through numerous significant transformations. The oil has improved dramatically from its purification process. CBD oil manufacturers are producing cleaner and more varied forms of CBD through advanced extraction technology.

As the industry matures, there is a need to address the growing questions and concerns of increasingly sophisticated consumers.  Right now, consumers are seeing “full spectrum”, “broad spectrum” and “CBD isolate”. What does this all mean? Here’s a quick breakdown of the various types of oil presently on the market.

What are the types and differences?

What is Full Spectrum CBD Oil? Full spectrum CBD oil is the extraction of oil from the entire plant along with all its 100+ other naturally occurring cannabinoid profiles.  This includes the famous tetrahydrocannabidiol or THC. THC is the most famous of all the cannabinoids due to its well known psychoactive effects. Therefore, the next follow up question would be…Is it legal? The answer is yes. In 2018 the Farm Bill was passed legalizing CBD full spectrum products if the product contain less than .03 percent THC per dry weight. This is why you can buy CBD online.

Will your dog get high? The short answer is, NO. There is not enough THC content in the industrial hemp plant to cause any psychoactive effects.

What is Broad Spectrum CBD Oil? Broad Spectrum oil contains all the same cannabinoid whole plant profile as full spectrum, minus the THC. This type of oil is a bit more costly than the full spectrum version since it uses newer technology.

What is CBD Isolate? This is a much more refined process where all the terpene and cannabinoid profiles are removed with the exception of CBD. It is the newest technology and is the most costly of the three. Typically mints, tablets and powders would fall into this category. Meanwhile, some people report not having the same effects as when a full spectrum oil is used.

One Caveat

The cannabis plant is part of nature, and nature itself is known to produce a vast array of variations and this plant is not exempt. Despite genetic manipulation, each mother plant that is selected by the harvester/ grower/ and extraction specialist who views this is their “special recipe” of cannabinoid and terpene profiles, and why they believe this is “the best” plant recipe.  No two are alike. This is why when you purchase oil or dog treats with CDB oil oil, it will differ from one vendor to another, and the effects are not all the same. Some work better on your pet than others. Therefore, think of it as Advil working better on you as a fever reducer, versus Tylenol which perhaps works better for you to rid a headache. Both work, but one works better than the other for different ailments, or perhaps one just works better period.

Which CBD is better?

There really is no cut and dry answer to this, much like Tylenol versus Advil. So, it really boils down to the pet owner’s preference and the pet’s needs. And lastly, how well it works to mitigate your pet’s condition.

Nature is a very powerful healer. We at Bark Avenue Hemp Treats believe in using a full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD oil for your pet. Our infused dog treats create an “Entourage Effect” which is a beneficial domino effect when all the cannabinoid and terepene profiles are combined like nature intended. CBD isolate does not have this and we believe henceforth that it full spectrum delivers the best overall healing benefits.

Understandably, some pet owners are wary about giving any amount of THC to their pets, even such a trace amount. Or perhaps, the production process for oil extractors may not be reliable that their THC levels remain within the low legal threshold. Hence, this is where third party test results come in, so do not hesitate to ask for the third party test results to ensure that the trace amounts are truly trace amounts.

What Does the Future of CBD Hold?

We are predicting all this new technology will create more designer CBD strains. In the future there will be with higher levels of CBG’s and CBN’s, etc. Watch for a follow up article on this subject. So, rest assured rest assured as the technology grows and the market matures, along with more innovative extraction technology, there will be more variations and varieties of dog treats with CBD oil on the market, just like dog breeds!

CBD Oil Benefits for Dogs

CBD is one of the dozens of cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is non-psychoactive so it makes it a gentler alternative in seeking relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, seizures, spasms and other chronic ailments. So, what are some of the CBD oil benefits for dogs?

According to  The Haddassah Medical School and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, they compared the effectiveness of purified CBD oil (isolates) versus a full spectrum extract.  They found that the whole plant extract that contained traces of other cannabinoids, proved to be superior in alleviating pain and inflammation than the purified version.¹

Now that the cannabis industry is becoming more mainstream and more widely accepted, people are trying it as a means of alternative, natural medicine. With many human success stories abound, it only seems natural that we think about the CBD oil benefits has done for loved ones, that we want to include our pets in the healing process.

CBD oil benefits for dogs dealing with chronic illnesses:

  • Seizures/ Epilepsy
  • Inflammation
  • GI Problems
  • Anxiety/ Stress
  • Pain
  • Limping
  • End of Life Care
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Poor appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
  • Aging & Overall Wellness²

How Does CBD Oil Work?

One of the reasons the cannabis plant provides many benefits for humans, dogs and other animals is due to the fact that we have similar endocannabinoid systems (ECS). The ECS is a receptor system in charge of pain sensation, mood, and appetite.  This is largely why big pharma tests on rats, cats,  rabbits, dogs and other animals before going to human clinical trials.  They know and understand the effects will be similar to what they can expect in humans.

The benefits of CBD oil are numerous. And the best part is, CBD has no reported incidences of  overdose or complications when used with pharmacological drugs.  At best, if you give your pet too much, it gets lazy. If you don’t give enough, then there is no effect.  We recommend 1-2 mg of CBD per ten pounds of dog as a starting point. This can be adjusted accordingly depending on the age and condition of the dog. Overall, it is a safe, natural way to help alleviate symptoms of aging, end of life care, and even the dreaded what to give dogs for fireworks anxiety.

Cannabis Dog Treats the Next Functional Dog Treats Trend?

Cannabis dog treat snacks with health-related claims are among the fastest growing new product launches.  Dog and cat owners who prioritize food product benefit statements are significantly more likely to strongly enjoy purchasing products that pamper their pets, according to the research director of Packaged Facts.¹

Update on the 2020 Marketplace: This segment has just exploded. It is saturated with manufacturers, companies looking to white label, and private label. Most of these private labelers do not have the in-depth knowledge about a product, unlike a direct manufacturer. Read for some tips to ensure you buy the safest and best quality pet product.

Studies

Research shows that the benefits of  CBD oil, also known as cannabidiol, include acting as an anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, antiemetic, anxiolytic and antipsychotic agent, and is therefore a potential medicine for the treatment of neuroinflammation, epilepsy, oxidative injury, vomiting and nausea, anxiety and schizophrenia. ²

“…dogs do have the same natural cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid systems (ECS) as humans,” according to Dr. Lascelles. (The ECS involves physiological processes such as appetite, pain sensation, mood and memory.) These receptors are found in the dog’s brain and peripheral nervous system.³

Cannabis [sic] is becoming more widely accepted for its potential medical uses, not just for people, but for companion animals too. Scientists have so far recognized up to 60 important chemicals, or cannabinoids, unique to marijuana.  According to the National Cancer Institute, “cannabinoids activate specific receptors found throughout the body to produce pharmacologic effects, particularly in the central nervous system and the immune system.” These natural chemicals may be helpful in treating cancer-related symptoms such as pain.”4

CBD Oil Benefits

  • Seizures
  • Inflammation
  • GI Problems
  • Anxiety/ Stress
  • Pain
  • Limping
  • End of Life Care
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Poor Appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
  • Hot Spots/ Skin & Coat

We use a full spectrum oil. The full spectrum version ensures the inclusion of all the benefits of the complete plant. This is known as the “Entourage Effect”.

Fun fact: Because we have similar endocannabinoid systems (ECS) to dogs cats, rats, pigs, etc. Therefore, big pharma uses them as test subjects to see how they will react. The ECS is responsible for mood, appetite, stress, anxiety and pain and other systems that put our bodies in homeostasis. Simply put–in balance.

CBD oil is an all natural alternative that is safe with very little side effects. The most common side effect would be diarrhea. But in contrast to vet prescriptions that lead to liver and kidney damage, this is a much safer alternative. This is nature at her finest.

Buying Guide

Cannabis is on the rise among dog owners who have ailing or aging dogs with chronic illnesses, they are looking for a natural solution in aiding pet wellness. We make our treats with whole ingredients. And have no preservatives or additives. We source our ingredients through sustainable sources to help do our share to protect the environment.

Our treats are manufactured in an SQF3 facility which is the highest rating for food safety standards. We make it in small controlled batches to ensure the highest safety and quality standards. The oil we use comes from a fully integrated grower, cultivator and manufacturer in Colorado. Even lab testing is done in-house.  This ensures full quality control and safety. Furthermore, we do third party testing on all product because we take your pet’s health seriously.

Product sold over the counter are made with industrial hemp oil.  Hemp is rich in cannabidiol and is non-psychoactive. It is safe with no reported overdoses or conflicts when mixed with other medication. The psychoactive versions can be found at dispensaries, typically in the recreational side. This is classified as marijuana. We highly recommend caution and do your due diligence. If you choose to dose your pet with the psychoactive version, consult your vet.

Tinctures

This is the oil that comes with a dropper and in a 1 or 2 ounce bottle. It is given orally or mixed in with your pet’s food. It is mixed with a carrier oil, typically like coconut oil. This binds to the CBD compounds and give is a nice uniform consistency.

If you choose this route, we suggest looking for a dropper with graduations. The dropper method isn’t the most accurate. There are 20 drops to a 1 ml dropper. Dogs do not typically enjoy the flavor associated with tinctures.

Edibles

This would be a hard baked cookie, soft chew or any other infused form. Regardless of which form you dispense your pet’s meds, it will be a personal choice, as well as ease and convenience. This is usually easier to dose and give to your pet like any other regular treat.

Projection 2017

We believe that this emerging market will be a big player in the functional treat market. It will explode once CBD gets re-classified.  For now, cannabis in all forms, even industrial hemp where CBD oil for dogs is extracted from, is considered a Schedule I drug.  Hemp and the marijuana plant fall under the cannabis umbrella until further notice. Sadly, even though hemp has no psychoactive effects.

But that does not mean that hypocrisy doesn’t fall short on the government. They are saying that there are no medicinal benefits to the marijuana plant. This is their whole premise for classifying it as a Schedule I controlled substance. Yet, they own Patent No. 6,630,507. The very same government owning a patent for medical use for marijuana. In the meantime, business that operate in the gray areas of the cannabis industry have to deal with overlapping industries that often do not understand our restraints.

Update: The Hemp Farming Act of 2018

Since this bill was passed, hemp was removed a Schedule I substance. Hemp is defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. It legalized the production of hemp. This law did not address the processing of hemp or the manufacture, distribution and sale of products made from hemp. This is why there are still so many gaps and unresolved issues especially with the sale of these types of products. It is a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot of obstacles and challenges.

Hemp can be used for textiles, rope, clothing, food, biofuel, insulation, shoes, bioplastics and much, much more. We are going to see an expansion of hemp into these industries in the future.

Also, the banking industry needs to follow any progress made on the federal level. We did notice one improvement, the increased in the number of payment processing companies. And their fees have also been much more competitive. The underwriting process has also not been as extensive as it was previously. Even Square the popular counterpart to Stripe, has joined in the game.

We will continue to keep our readers posted for new developments.
